,The Art Historians of Southern California invite proposals for their Annual Symposium to be held on October, 2012 (location in the greater L.A. area to be announced). This year’s theme will be “Somaesthetics: images of the body, images of the mind”, reflecting the association’s interest in interdisciplinary approaches to art history.
Recent advances in philosophy, psychology and the cognitive sciences have drawn attention to new concepts of body consciousness, or somatic consciousness, suggesting that the body is the basic medium of perception and therefore knowledge. Moving beyond the duality of body and mind, somatic philosophy, thus, attempts to delineate a new relationship between body, ethics and aesthetics (somaesthetics). The conference calls for papers that will address the manner in which representations of the body may suggest ways of thinking about knowledge, seeing, perception, the ontology of the body and other embodied functions. Paper may address, but are not limited to, film, painting, sculpture, photography, performance arts, material culture and may draw from both Western and non-Western theories of body-mind awareness (there are no chronological limitations).
Abstracts should not exceed 150 words and be submitted by August 30th. Include a cv and a short bio with each submission. Please submit them to Dr. Liliana Leopardi at liliana.leopardi@nyu.edu
