In 2012 Middlesbrough applied for city status making its university the ideal place to examine aspects of the modern city’s evolution in the UK and Europe. Accordingly, the Centre for Regional and Local Historical Research (CRLHR) at Teesside University – in collaboration with the North East England History Institute (NEEHI) – is holding a two day international conference. Bringing together specialists in Urban History, from established scholars to graduate students, it will consider themes including the city as cultural space, civic improvement and conscious and unconscious urban planning. Keynote speakers are Professor John Beckett (University of Nottingham) and Professor Barry Doyle (University of Huddersfield).
