Punk and CULTURE
34th Annual Southwest Texas Popular and American Culture Conference
February 13-16, 2013 at Hyatt Regency Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Celebrating Popular/American Cultures in a Global Context.
In keeping with this year’s theme of global context, we are particularly interested in papers that consider punk as a global phenomenon, but any paper dealing with punk and culture will be considered.
Punk is more than a mere musical styling; it’s a way of making sense of the world and one’s place in it. I am particularly interested in papers exploring punk’s political stances, the impact of location on the creation of punk in places such as 924 Gilman street, representations of punk in TV shows as varied as Punky Brewster and Criminal Minds, iconic film images of Punk such as Taxi Driver and Lisbeth Salander, Punk and globalization, punk as a global phenomenon in areas other than the US (Tokyo, Canada, Iran, Russia, etc.) and Punk rock today (Gogol Bordello and others). I am very interested in papers exploring Pussy Riot and the punk activism or Russia.
