The 11th Annual Conference of the Igbo Studies Association
Theme: “Ohaka: The Community is Supreme.”
Modotel, Enugu, Nigeria
June 27 – 29, 2013
The Igbo Studies Association (ISA) extends a special invitation to scholars and professionals working on all aspects of studies on the Igbo of Eastern Nigeria and its diaspora for its 11th annual international conference to be held from June 27 – 29, 2013, at Modotel, Enugu, Nigeria.
The Igbo World has been undergoing significant transformations in light of major local, national and global developments. These transformations have posed serious challenges to various aspects of the history, cultures and societies. The Igbo traditional concept of OHAKA remains one such value that has been under tremendous onslaught as a consequence of urbanization, modernity and globalization. Thus, the 11th Annual Meeting will examine the general theme – Ohaka: The Community is Supreme, which is conceptualized in the broadest possible ways to include a variety of topics such as history, culture, development, language, law, women, men, migration, childhood, economy, science, technology and Igbo diaspora communities in historic and contemporary contexts. We welcome both local and international specialists/intellectuals at all stages in their careers to facilitate discussion and dialogue across disciplines and between scholars and professionals and to ask how the Igbo world has influenced and have been influenced by a changing global world.
Panels and individual proposals will engage with a variety of topics on
• history, politics, economics
• status and power relations
• shifting individual and community identities
• urban mobility and community variations
• communities and popular cultures
• community identities in cyber societies
• intra and inter-ethnic relations
• the Igbo and the Nigerian nation
• law, crime and punishment
• Igbo language, folklores, and values
