The LEWI International Conference on “The Catholic Church in China from 1900 to the Present”
DATE: June 6-7, 2013
1. THE CONFERENCE:
LEWI welcomes panel and individual paper submissions to the international conference on "The Catholic Church in China (including Inner Mongolia, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) from 1900 to the present."
The conference adopts an inter-disciplinary approach to the study of the Chinese Catholic Church. Professors, researchers, post-doc fellows, and graduate students of History, Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Theology, Religious Studies, Gender Studies, Humanities, and Translation are welcome to join.
Topics of panels and papers can be on individual Catholic congregations, Catholic societies, institutions, personalities, regions, provinces, cities, villages, and parishes. Cross-cultural studies are most welcome.
2. CONFERENCE THEMES:
- Modern and contemporary events and personalities;
- Cross-cultural, intercultural, and transcultural case studies;
- The role of women in the Chinese Catholic Church;
- Bible translations;
- Sino-Vatican relations;
- Foreign Catholic missionary groups in Chinese society;
- Regional, provincial, and local case studies;
- Comparisons between Chinese church communities on the mainland, in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan;
- Dialogue between the Catholic Church and other Protestant Churches;
- Dialogue between Catholicism and other religions in Chinese society;
- The impact of Vatican II on the Chinese Catholic Church;
- The development of theology;
- The contemporary establishment of the Catholic Church on the mainland; and
- The prospects of the Chinese Catholic Church
3. SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS:
Deadline for submissions of titles and abstracts of panels and papers: August 15, 2012.
Abstract of each paper (in English or Chinese) should be about 200-300 words.

4. NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE OF PROPOSALS:
Notification of acceptance of proposals: on or before October 1, 2012.
5. REGISTRATION:
Registration fee: US$250 or HK$1,940;
Special rate for graduate students: US$150 or HK$1,160
Late and onsite registration: US$300 or HK$2,330;
Special rate for graduate students: US$200 or HK$1,550
Two luncheons and one banquet are included.

8. ABOUT LEWI:
David C. Lam Institute for East-West Studies (LEWI) is a consortium of 28 universities from North America, Europe and Asia. LEWI, with Hong Kong Baptist University as the host institution and base, was established in 1993.
LEWI has two missions: (1) to promote mutual understanding between East and West through research, academic exchange, and other scholarly activities; and (2) to promote inter-disciplinary research in social sciences and humanities from both the perspectives of the East and West.
