As the world’s largest ocean, covering the northern and southern hemispheres, and with over 40,000 years of human habitation on its islands and shores, the Pacific has a more expansive and diverse set of histories than any other region in the world. Its very diversity has defied synthesis but recent developments in oceanic, transnational, and global history have now made pan-Pacific histories possible. This conference will be the first collective enterprise to place the Pacific squarely within the paradigms of the new oceanic history and to bring together leading historians and anthropologists who have made signal contributions to the new histories of the Pacific. All papers will be pre-circulated and presentations will be brief to allow maximum time for discussion.
