Call for Papers for a Special Issue: Curating Costume/Exhibiting Fashion
Editors:Shannon Bell Price, Assistant Chair of Fashion
Pratt Institute, School of Art and Design
Sarah Scaturro, Conservator
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Costume Institute
Consulting Editor: Patricia A. Cunningham
Impetus for a focused issue of the journal follows the success of the recent exhibition and conference
on Diana Vreeland who viewed fashion as a powerful instrument for the interpretation of trends
and taste, and the unprecedented exhibition “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” at the Met in 2011
which revealed how fully the public has embraced fashion as a part of the contemporary Zeitgeist.
These sensational events have moved curators, artists and designers to push the boundaries of what,
how and where to exhibit fashion, thereby creating an even closer dialogue between fashion, museums
and popular culture.
Defining Curation as collection building, documentation and maintenance, as well as interpretation
and exhibition in and out of the museum context, Curating Costume/Exhibiting Fashion aims to
explore the evolving discipline of fashion curation in the context of popular culture. Interdisciplinary
scholarly research articles as well as book and exhibition reviews are invited. Possible topics include
but are not limited to:
• Fashion curating in the museum and/or gallery context
• Fashion curating in the academy and education
• The role of interactive and social media in fashion curation
• Luxury branding through exhibitions
• Changes in fashion curation over time
• The relationship between fashion editing and fashion curation
• The future of fashion curation
• Issues in collection building and display
• Accessibility and maintenance of collections
• Interpretation of fashion in the curation process
• Dissemination of fashion curation through popular culture
• Fashion curation within the context of popular literature, music, film and television
