A Public Lecture: “A Son Discovers His Father’s War”
Date: Sunday, June 17, 2012
Time: 2:00 P.M.
Place: Jacksonville Historical Society, 317 A. Philip Randolph Blvd., Jacksonville, Florida
The Institute on World War II and the Human Experience is pleased to sponsor in conjunction with the Jacksonville Historical Society a public lecture by Peter Dunbar, one of Florida’s leading attorneys and public servants. In this special Father’s Day program, Peter will tell about a son’s journey of discovery to learn about his father’s war. Growing up in Dunedin, Florida, Peter will recount how his father, Carol O. Dunbar seldom talked about serving as an aviator with the Marine Squadron VMF-214 in the unit later known as the “Black Sheep” under the command of “Pappy” Boyington. Only after coming across his father’s war-time letter did Peter learn how a Connecticut Yankee came to embrace Florida. In the South Pacific, combat tours took Carl Dunbar to Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands. Peter will share excerpts from his father’s letters and copies of Before They Were the Black Sheep: Marine Fighting VMF-214 and the Battle for the Solomon Islands (University Press of Florida) will be available for purchase.
This public lecture is open to the general public. There is no admission charge, but an RSVP is welcome.
