We invite everyone to visit the online Annual LIU Global Conference. This year's conference focused on the topic of Social Movements. One of the reasons that we decided to focus this year’s conference on social movements was because we are inspired by how people in different parts of the world are resisting oppressive regimes and practices. In the year 2011, the international community witnessed historical events that changed the political landscape of the globe, ranging from the Arab Spring, to the “Occupy Wall Street Movement” and other protest movements around the globe. These events represent, each in their own specific context, the people’s will for a change, whether it is political, economic or social and their unified demand for more equality and justice.
Globalization is said to homogenize cultures and societies and yet we find resistance in all parts of the world. The fact that individuals are finding strength in collectivities make us wonder how these movements form, what issues are being raised, how long these movements last, how they are structured, how they are tied to the global system, how they represent diversity (of opinions, ethnicity, religion, gender, class, etc) within the collectivity, what strategies they use to negotiate or pressure current government structures, what and how movements have been successful in achieving their goals among other things. The objective of this conference is to expose the common goal of the public for more equality in the political, economic and social spheres around the world.
What is LIU Global?
LIU Global is a bachelor's degree in Global Studies that includes permanent centers in Costa Rica, India, China and USA, and in its Comparative Religions and Culture Program Course travels to Taiwan, Thailand, India and Turkey, as well as making semester-long use of a Long Island program campus in Australia. In addition to this, in their last year senior students carry out field research in diverse countries around the world. With such an experience of coming in contact with a wide variety of cultures, and with its academic curriculum focused of Global Studies, Global College, as a collectivity, is in a privileged position to carry out a yearly conference on issues of global importance, not only to nourish its own members, but to contribute knowledge beyond the confines of LIU Global to those without the opportunities this program provides.
