This session is a roundtable discussion focusing on approaches to teaching Asian American/Canadian Literature. Since the rise of Asian American studies in the U.S. in the late 1960s, the significance of the works written by authors of Asian descent has been gradually recognized in college curriculum. However, texts taught in Asian American literature or American literature survey courses seem to be still circulating among the same major authors, such as Maxine Hong Kingston, Amy Tan, and Henry David Hwang. In Asian Canadian literature, Joy Kogawa appears to be the only recognizable author. This session would like to invite instructors of Asian American/Canadian literature or Ethnic Literatures to share their experiences of teaching Asian American/Canadian texts. The possible topics include canonized/most anthologized texts to be taught in new approaches, underrepresented texts that show the significance in contributing to Asian American/Canadian studies, tactics of developing a curriculum customized for Asian American/Canadian literature courses, suggestions about Asian American/Canadian texts in American/Canadian literature survey or Ethnic Literatures courses, issues that have arisen in the classroom when discussing Asian American/Canadian texts, and any pedagogical concerns worth addressing. This panel welcomes any pedagogical discussions, especially on interdisciplinary approaches, instruction of alternative genres (e.g., film or graphical novel), and Asian Canadian literature. Interested participants can submit a 500-word abstract to Brian Chen (bchen@faculty.ocadu.ca) by September 30, 2013.
