Panel: Poetry and the Body
This panel seeks papers that consider how poets represent bodies, how poetry is embodied by poets in performance, and/or how poetry may require an embodied experience of its audience. Topics may respond to theories of embodiment and material feminism; they may respond to any variety of related poetry. For example, feminist poets like Audre Lorde and Adrienne Rich made their bodily experiences of the world central to their poetry: race, gender, and sexuality are all intimately linked to the body. But Eliot's age-anxious Prufrock, Mark Doty's representations of bodies with AIDS, and contemporary performance poetry all address the centrality of embodiment to the poetic agenda. Poets portray living bodies, ill bodies, bodies under surveillance, bodies moving through space, bodies dying or dead. Tan Lin's ambient poetics even requires the reader of poetry to have an embodied experience. All related topics will are welcome.
