We are glad to announce that this year¡¦s biennial conference of the Historical Association of South Africa will be showcasing a wide range of research related to the broadly framed theme focusing on the different facets of ¡§Doing History¡¨. The proposals received thus far have been clustered into the following broad themes and we would like to solicit papers that would complement and supplement these:
These include, but are by no means limited to, the following:
o Transnationalism, migrant identities, networks, kinships and minorities
o Socio-Environmental history, including conservation and water
o History of Leisure and Consumption
o Gender, Masculinity, Gay Studies
o Health, Medicine and Psychiatric History
o International relations, political cultures and protest
o Teaching History in comparative perspective
o Historiography, Methodology, Oral History and Archives
o Khoisan identities
o Military History
o Biography
Keynote speakers are Prof Ian Phimister (University of Sheffield) & Prof Bill Nasson (University of Stellenbosch).
We are therefore extending the deadline for submission of abstracts to the 8 June 2012 in the hope of attracting more scholars to participate in what looks to be a vibrant discussion of current historical research. We have kept the conference registration fee to the absolute minimum (R750.00 and postgraduate students R500.00) and have also arranged subsidised accommodation in order to facilitate participation. Postgraduate students are invited to enter the Postgraduate Student Award for the best conference paper and to be eligible must submit a full version of their conference paper by 15 June. All papers presented at the conference will be considered for possible publication in Historia, HASA¡¦s accredited journal.
The conference will be held on the Main Campus (Hatfield) at the University of Pretoria from 6 to 7 July 2012. Attached the registration form, subsidised accommodation form, list of guesthouse accommodation as well details of the Gautrain.
Please note the following important dates:
„« Abstracts due by 8 June 2012
„« Complete papers by postgraduate students due by 15 June to enter the Post graduate Student Award
„« Notification of acceptance of Abstracts by 15 June 2012
„« Final Date for Conference Registration is 30 June 2012
