CALL FOR PAPERS
North African-Turkish Congress for Humanities and Social Sciences - NATCHASS-2012
“Social Transformations and Youth”
Venue and Date: Istanbul, November 1-3, 2012
With technology, urbanization, globalization and the Arab Spring, the societies of the Middle East and North Africa are going through major transformations. Moreover, these societies face similar problems and they become more open to each other. Youth are the social group affected the most by these social transformations. At the same time the youth are very open to changes and they have a great potential to contribute to social development with their energy, productivity and creativity. In Turkish and North African societies youth constitute a great majority. Governments implement programs for youth development such as economic, cultural, educational programs while some of them only remain at discursive level. While social and economic problems affect youth the most, the government programs targeting the youth are far from meeting their needs and wishes. The effects of new media on youth also attract the attention of social scientists and humanities in relation to the youth’s interaction with these new social contexts.
North African-Turkish Congress for Humanities and Social Sciences (NATCHASS) aims to discuss these issues and transformations in Turkey and North Africa (namely, Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Mauritania) by bringing together scholars and experts from the region and around the world. It also aims to encourage comparative analyses among the societies of the region and to increase academic cooperation among the scholars of Turkey and North Africa. Every year the Congress will gather in a different country with a different theme. The Congress will hopefully pave the way for an institutionalized academic cooperation between Turkey and North Africa. For more about the Congress and the conditions of participation read the Concept paper in English (You can also see the call for papers in Arabic and Turkish). No registration fee required.
