Call for Papers for a Conference:
"Ka-Tzetnik: The Impact of the First Holocaust Novelist in Israel and Beyond" University of Calgary, March 11-13, 2013
Yehiel Dinur, born Yehiel Feiner in Poland in 1917, became famous in 1950s Israel under the pen-name Ka-Tzetnik. Testifying at Adolf Eichmann’s trial on June 7, 1961, he restated his famous statement that Auschwitz was “another planet” before collapsing in the courtroom. His numerous semi-autobiographical memoirs and novels have been widely read and commemorated in Israel. For many post-WWII Israelis, these vivid and even shocking books provided the first and most formative exposure to the history of the Holocaust. This conference will examine both the reception of Ka-Tzetnik in Israel and the role that his books have played in the larger discussion of the Holocaust and its memorialization around the world.
We invite scholars interested in all aspects of Ka-Tzetnik’s work and reception to attend a conference in Calgary in March 2013. Our discussions will place Ka-Tzetnik’s legacy into the larger discussion of Holocaust literature and memorialization, both in and outside of Israel. We welcome proposals from all disciplines and particularly encourage comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives. Applicants are asked to send a 200-300 word proposal and a curriculum vitae to one of the two conference organizers listed below by September 1, 2012. We seek only original (not previously published) work that can be revised for publication within three months after the conference. Suggested themes include, but are not limited to the following:
Yehiel Dinur as author, survivor, memoirist
Ka-Tzetnik’s reception in Israel
Ka-Tzetnik’s reception outside of Israel
Ka-Tzetnik and the Eichmann trial
Comparing Ka-Tzetnik and other Holocaust memoirists
Ka-Tzetnik’s works as literature and/or memoir
Sexual themes in Ka-Tzetnik’s work
The University of Calgary Israel Studies Program is pleased to sponsor this conference, and will provide funding for travel and accommodation to invited speakers.
