The Programa Interdisciplinario de Estudios de la Mujer (PIEM) at the Centro de Estudios Sociológicos (CES) at El Colegio de México, in conjunction with the Red de Historia de Mujeres y de Género en México (REDMUGEN), is pleased to invite the academic community to submit proposals for the VI International Conference on the History of Gender and Women in Mexico. The conference will take place at El Colegio de México from March 13-March 15, 2013.
The primary objectives of the VI International Conference are: To provide an academic forum for the presentation and discussion of original research that opens up critical dialogues about theory and knowledge related to the history of gender and women in Mexico, and to promote and strengthen ties within the international academic community dedicated to research on the history of gender and women in Mexico.
The conference is open to scholars engaged in research on the history of gender and women in Mexico. Researchers who are in the earliest stages of their academic careers are especially encouraged to submit a proposal. Proposals from more established scholars will also be considered. Preference will be given to proposals from researchers who did not participate in the V International Conference. We will accept individual proposals, as well as panel proposals of no more than four presenters. In order to foster inter-institutional dialogue, panel proposals with presenters from different institutions and countries are preferred.
Themes
The conference welcomes proposals related to any theme on the history of gender and women in Mexico from the post-Independence period to the present. Examples include:
-Gender in social, political, and religious movements
-Bodies, technologies of power and gendered representations
-Gender, nationalism, and the formation of institutions and the state
-Gender and media
-Masculinity
-Gendered violence in public and private spaces
-Sexual diversity: identities, sociabilities, and practices
-Gender in border and transnational communities
-Gender and methodological concerns in biography and life histories
Proposals may address the history of gender and women in Mexico from any disciplinary and methodological perspective. To be considered, proposals should be no more than 550 words and must include an overview of the topic that also explains the significance of the research and a brief description of the primary sources consulted. Proposals should include a one-page CV. Proposals and presentations will be accepted in English and Spanish.
