Editors:

------------------------------------------------------
From the ancient through colonial and up to the contemporary age, the in egalitarian nature of Indian caste system towards the Dalits and women is a common feature. Social scientists have extensively analyzed the situation of Dalits and women in Brahmanical Hinduism. In recent years various caste-based reservation Acts and agitations against such Acts mainly in educational sector and job sector particularly in urban areas display a very high level of caste consciousness of urban India. Thus, from ancient period, caste remains a powerful and potent force in Indian society which shapes the social, economic and political development of the country. Caste system not only determines the social division of labour, but it influences the gender-based differences also. Thus a question arises, is there a relationship between caste status, caste hierarchy and womanhood?
