The International Brecht Society and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul are collaborating on the 14th IBS Symposium in Porto Alegre (Brazil) from May 20-23, 2013 on the topic of "The Creative Spectator: Collision and Dialogue". Political theater in Bertolt Brecht’s sense today must be conceived in terms of the spectator, and Brecht’s call for a new “art of spectatorship” can only be realized today in the context of a media environment in which audience practices have undergone dramatic changes. Audiences today who consume music, television or films are distracted; they use smartphones and the Internet and are accustomed to superficial but immediate interactive communication. What opportunities does politically oriented theater have in this changing environment to encourage their audience in their own creativity? Especially in Latin America there is a lively tradition of political theater after Brecht that has developed new “dramaturgies of the spectator.” This direct or indirect reception of Brecht during the past 25 years constitutes the Symposium’s focus.
