In his talk Professor Leos Muller traces the rise of Swedish shipping from a position of deep crisis after the Great Northern War (1700-1721). He explores how Sweden avoided the grand conflict between Britain and France, and exploited its commercial neutrality to become a major European supplier of iron and Baltic naval stores, emerging in the 1780s with Europe’s fifth merchant fleet.
Professor Muller is Director of the Centre for Maritime Studies, Stockholm University
