"A New Vision of Black Freedom: The Manning Marable Conference," brings together scholars, students, activists, teachers, artists, social workers, community residents and others for a series of democratic conversations about the task of creating a more equitable and just world. The political spirit of the conference reflects Dr. Marable’s materialist critique of racism, imperialism, war, and capitalist exploitation, as well as his commitment to the black radical tradition; transnational liberation movements; human rights; environmental justice; radical democracy; and the struggles of oppressed and colonized people around the world; workers; women; the poor; people of color; gays and lesbians; immigrants; and prisoners. Sponsored by the Institute for Research in African-American Studies at Columbia University and the Ford Foundation, the conference seeks to generate new energy, analysis, ideas and initiatives that creatively address the crisis of structural racism.
