The Jefferson Scholars Foundation and the Jefferson Graduate Fellows at the University of Virginia present the third biannual Forum for Interdisciplinary Dialogue, taking place September 28 and 29, 2012. The Forum is an interdisciplinary conference for students, faculty, and community members from around the globe. The theme for 2012 is “Fact, Fiction, and Supposition: Creating Truth, Engineering Reality”. We are especially pleased to have astronomer and author Dr. Phil Plait giving the keynote address.
Call For Papers
Societies and individuals negotiate the boundaries between fact, fiction, and supposition on a daily basis. These concepts affect the perception and pursuit of knowledge, cultural constructs, and creative practice. Yet our information is often far from complete, so our notions of truth tend to be shaped by individual experience or influenced by some outside authority. But, what is fact? How is knowledge established, evaluated, and disseminated? As sources of information multiply in today’s increasingly globalized world, how do we navigate competing voices? The 2012 Forum for Interdisciplinary Dialogue welcomes submissions that explore the pursuit, articulation, evaluation, dissemination, or concealment of knowledge and truth in any historical or geographical context.
Possible topics may include but are not limited to:
Wikipedia and collaboratively generated information
Friction between science and pseudo-science
Science and religion in dialogue
Imaginary knowledge
Fiction/truth and memory
The establishment of the “canon”
The development of the scientific method
Conflicting truths in the classroom
Truth claims and the 2012 presidential election
Please follow the link for Abstract Submission Instructions for application instructions. Abstracts of 250 words or less for poster presentations, 15 minute paper presentations, or performances will be considered. Accepted applicants will be notified by May 21, 2012
