CFP for a panel entitled: “Olympic ideals: what value(s) for Olympism in the 21st century?” at the Annual Conference of the Global Studies Association from July 5th – 7th 2012 at Manchester Metropolitan University.
This panel will critically consider the ways in which the modern Olympic Games contributes to social, political, economic and cultural discourse and action. The Olympic Charter states that “The goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of humankind”, but how are such Olympic values situated in this period of late modernity? Are ideas surrounding cosmopolitanism, nationalism or commercialism rejuvenated? What kind of discourse emanates from the Olympics? Are there winners and losers beyond the sporting arena? This panel aims to address these questions and more.
Abstracts of 250 words, with name, contact details and institutional affiliation should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org before 27th April 2012. Speakers will be contacted subsequently.
