CALL FOR PAPERS: SPECIAL ISSUE ON THE HISTORY OF OTTOMAN JEWS
KÖK, Journal of Social Studies and Strategic Researches (ISSN 1302-292X), is a biannually peer reviewed journal published in Turkey. The journal addresses to the multidisciplinary field of social sciences and humanities. By encouraging theoretical and applied research, the journal aims to provide a medium and an intellectual platform for debates and new scholarly ideas. It gives priority to the publication of original researches in the fields of international relations, history, strategy, sociology, ethnography and anthropology, education, sociolinguistics, and politics. The journal publishes original papers, conceptual framework, analytical and case studies, empirical research and book reviews.
We are delighted to call for papers to be published in a special issue of KÖK, Journal of Social Studies and Strategic Researches on the history of Ottoman Jews in Early 2012. It welcomes papers in Turkish, English and Russian. Original research papers, as well as expository and survey papers are sought and invited. Some of the subjects, scholars are encouraged to submit proposals on are, but not limited to:
1. Continuity, stability and change: Ottoman Jewish communities from the Ottoman classical period, including Early Modern and Modern Era till the end of First World War.
2. The folkloric, ethnological, literary, artistic and intellectual peculiarities of Ottoman Jewish Culture,
3. Ethnic and religious relations between the Ottoman Jewish communities,
4. “The peculiarities of relationship” between Jewish communities and Ottoman state; the process of integration or distinctiveness.
5. The Institution of Grand Rabbinate in Ottoman Empire, and its historical development,
6. Urban Ottoman Jewish communities (old and new yishuv in Balkan, Anatolian and Middle Eastern Cities),
7. The reciprocal relationship between Ottoman Jews and other communities in Ottoman society, and the changing pattern of this relationship through different periods of Ottoman history,
8. The system of though and values emerged in Europe in the 19th century and its effect upon Ottoman Jews,
9. The Jewish literature in Ottoman domains, the publication activities carried out by the Jews (religious and non-religious),
10. The notable families identified with the Jewish communities of Istanbul, Salonika, Smyrna, Bursa, Adrianople and so on, the biographies of “distinguished” members of these families,
11. The challenges confronting Ottoman Jews in the 19th century, Jewish emigration from Russia, the Jewish Diaspora and Zionism, the ideas and attitudes of Ottoman Jewish intellectuals towards Zionism,
12. The present nature of Semitic studies in Western Orientalism (the studies of British, American, French, and Russian Orientalists related with Jewish and Arabic culture),
13. The methodological and bibliographical challenges in the studies on Ottoman Jews,
