We are looking for papers on African labor studies. The panel is multidisciplinary as it combines historical, economic, sociological, anthropological, and political analyses of the working people of Africa. It presents both theoretical papers and empirical case studies on labor issues. Topics for discussion include the impact of historical patterns of economic development and the role of international factors in African labor relations; evolving identities and patterns of collective workers’ solidarities; the changing nature of labor organizations in a context of informalization and decline of regular employment; the relations between labor struggles and community movements; the significance of labor movements in relation to shifting investment flows across regions and economic sectors; the importance of global connections (or so-called “teleconnections”) in shaping labor conditions and even creating new labour forms. The panel is co-organised by Prof. F. Barchiesi (Ohio State University) and Dr. S. Bellucci (IISH, Amsterdam). Please send the abstract, max. 250 words, to: sbe@iisg.nl
