In commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Independence in Trinidad and Tobago, the Department of History at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine campus will be organizing a three day international conference from the 13-15 September 2012. This conference entitled “In The Fires Of Hope: 50 Years of Independence In Trinidad And Tobago,” is designed to investigate all facets of the theme of Independence in the region, with emphasis on Trinidad and Tobago. It aims to generate new discussion on the changing realities of independent societies by gathering thinkers and academics involved in examining the economic, political, historical, literary and social aspects of independence from the nascent stages to present day. The conference will explore new perspectives on such issues as the opposition to colonialism, the movement to self rule regionally and locally, the major protagonists in the independence movements, the construction of independent nations, the new societies forged and their challenges, and the impact, successes and failures of political changes.
INITIAL CALL FOR PAPERS
We invite papers that deal with all aspects of independence in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean. Contributors are requested to submit a 250 word abstract, including the title of the paper, to the email address below. Participants can also submit proposals for entire panels, with the titles of the panels and/or themes to be discussed.

Deadline for the submission of Abstracts: 2 March 2012.
