Description: Seeking to form a panel for the American Society for Legal History (ASLH) Annual Meeting / Conference in St. Louis, Missouri on Nov. 8-11, 2012.
This panel will deal with women in the United States in the late eighteenth-century and nineteenth-century who defamed others or were defamed with public utterance and related legal actions that implicating women’s reputational concerns. Methods and approaches can vary widely. My own paper deals with women and the politics of slander in Upper Louisiana and Missouri, 1804-1860.
