UCSIA organizes in collaboration with members of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Department of History of the University of Antwerp the two-day international workshop Beauty: Commons versus Contests from Wednesday 24 until Friday 26 October 2012 at the University of Antwerp.
The programme wants to investigate the way that beauty is being commodified and how it is being negotiated and renegotiated in local and global contexts via magazines, advertisement and television. Moreover it wants to look at the effects of globalizing beauty standards on people’s identification and wellbeing.
Papers may address any of the following subtopics:
- Local and Global Cultures of Beauty
- Construction of Beauty: Psychological Perspective
- (Globalizing) Beauty Standards: The Role of the Media, Advertisement and Industry
- Beauty and Society: Physical and Mental Health, Plastic Surgery, Deontology
The deadline for submitting your application is Sunday 13 May 2012. Candidates should send in the completed submission form, accompanied by a short academic curriculum vitae and an outline of the proposed paper. The selection of participants will be communicated by the beginning of June 2012.
