A special issue of Scientia Militaria (South African Journal for Military Studies) is planned to mark the centenary of the establishment of armed forces for South Africa. The Union of South Africa came into being in 1910 and, two years later, on July 1 1912, the Union Defence Forces were established with the integration of the armed forces of the four constituent provinces. The UDF became the SADF in 1957 and then the SA National Defence Force, following the dawning of the New South Africa in 1994 and the integration of the liberation movements.
The special issue will comprise two parts. Part 1 will be themed to mark the hundred years in terms of regular milestones, addressing organisational development, training, the development of policy and strategy, and operational success and, sometimes, failure. Part 2, envisioned to be more eclectic, will include articles that cover broad swathes of the century and range a multiplicity of possible themes from policy and strategy, and education and training, to leisure-time utilisation and the view of the SANDF 100 years hence.
Please submit abstracts of roughly 300 words to Ian van der Waag at ian@ma2.sun.ac.za by 30 March 2012. Authors will be notified by 15 April whether or not their abstract has been accepted. The date for the full-length article is 30 June. Articles should be between 8,000 and 10,000 words in length, including an abstract of about 200 words. Submissions will be evaluated by the editors and then a double, blind review. Preliminary enquiries are welcomed.
Format: Follow current issues of the journal.
