Call for Proposals
Star Trek Fan Culture
Chapter proposals are being sought for an upcoming anthology on Star Trek fan culture to be published by Intellect Books. This book is part of a new series on fan phenomena that will be broadly accessible, targeting scholars, those interested in the social and cultural aspects of fan phenomena, and fans themselves. The series aims to “decode” cult subjects in terms of the appeal and far-reaching connections each of them has in becoming part of popular culture.
Possible topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Overview of Star Trek Fan Culture
History of Star Trek Fan Fiction (mail delivery, e-mail/BBS, early video)
Contemporary Star Trek Fan Fiction (WWW, online social media, YouTube)
Star Trek Conference/Convention Behavior
Star Trek Fan Culture and Merchandising
Celebrities and Star Trek Fan Behavior
LGBTQ Fans and Star Trek
Gender Difference and Star Trek Fan Culture
Race/Ethnicity and Star Trek Fan Culture
The Globalization of Star Trek Fan Culture
Star Trek Fans and Popular Culture (criticism, parody, reaction)
The Future of Star Trek Fan Culture
Submissions should include a proposed title, an abstract of approximately 250 words that outlines the topic and how it contributes to the book and to the objectives of the larger series, and an author biography including a summary of recent publications. Please send proposals as e-mail attachments to Dr. Bruce E. Drushel at drushebe@muohio.edu by March 20th. Complete chapter manuscripts of 3000-3500 words will be due June 15th.
