The Organising Committee, on behalf of the Steering Committee of the History of Marine
Animal Populations (HMAP) initiative, invites proposals for papers and sessions for the
fourth Oceans Past conference, to be held at the University of Notre Dame, Fremantle,
7-9 November 2012.
Contributors should submit proposals for either individual 20-minute papers, or session
proposals comprising of three 20-minute papers. A brief CV (max. 1-page) should also be
submitted for each contributor.
Papers are welcome from any disciplinary or multi-disciplinary perspective addressing
past interactions between humans and marine animal populations, changes in the
marine environment over time, or the history of marine resources and their
management.
Preference will be given to papers addressing one of the following five themes:
1. Seas Across Time: social and ecological impacts of climate change in inshore,
near-shore, open-sea and deep-sea environments
2. Fishing Across the Ages: declines and recoveries of marine animal populations
3. Evolution of Understandings: perspectives on the history of marine science,
fisheries management, harvesting strategies and conservation philosophies
4. Innovative Approaches: concepts and methodologies in marine environmental
history and historical marine ecology
5. Farthest Frontiers: Arctic and Antarctic seas
