In May 2011 I received a postdoctoral grant from the Austrian Fund for Scientific Research (FWF). I have the honour to realise my Lise Meitner Fellowship at a specialized research institute in Vienna: The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for European History and Public Spheres. Recently an unmotivated decision coming ´from above` informed us that the institute will have to close down. I kindly ask all those, who are concerned about basic research in the humanities, to sign the petition `Basic research is not a matter of management convenience`. Although the closure does not affect my contract, I lose a splendid research environment as well as very competent colleagues.

Drodzy koledzy,

W maju 2011 roku dostalam grant postdoktorancki z Austriackiego Funduszu Badan Naukowych (FWF). Jako Lise Meitner Fellow, mam zaszczyt prowadzić moje badania w Instytucie Historii Europejskiej im. Ludwiga Boltzmanna w Wiedniu (LBI EHP).

Ostatnio niestety podjęto zaskakującą nieuzasadnioną decyzję o zamknięciu Instytutu. Proszę wszystkich, którym leżą na sercu nauki humanistyczne, o podpisanie petycji `Basic research is not a matter of management convenience`. Chociaż zamknięcie Instytutu nie ma konsekwencji dla mojego statusu zawodowego, to zamknięcie Instytutu oznacza utratę ośrodka o dużej renomie, a dla mnie osobiście - stratę świetnego otoczenia badawczego oraz kolegów.
