The seminar will expose participants to the rich culture and civilization of Morocco focusing on the intertwined and interwoven relationship between language and culture. Situated at the northwestern frontier of Africa, Morocco is a rich tapestry of cultural influences— African and European; Arab and Berber; Islamic and Judaic. Seminar topics will include topics of historic significance such as North African contributions to Western Thought as well as contemporary topics such as the challenges of linguistic diversity; the challenges of globalization to cultural identity; and challenges presented by the political upheavals of the region. The seminar will include tours of modern metropolises such as Casablanca, historic cities such as Rabat, Aessaouiria and Safi, Berber towns such as Agadir, cultural centers such as Marrakesh and Fez, safaris in Le Petit Desert and mini hikes in the mountains.
