Close to a year after the events of the Tohoku earthquake of March 11th, 2011, this workshop seeks to examine how it has affected the lives of non-Japanese living in Japan, as well as the migration patterns and flows of individuals into and out of the country. Some of the key problems that will be explored are
- Immigration patterns and trends following the earthquake as well as the threat of nuclear radiation
- The impact on the international/non-Japanese community in Japan and their reactions to the earthquake
- Media coverage of international communities in both local and
overseas press
- Identity and belonging following in the wake of disaster
- Health risks and responses to the nuclear issue
We seek to bring together academics, activists, as well as volunteers and those who have been directly involved in dealing with immigrants following the earthquake in the Tohoku region. Our aim is to provide a space for dialogue, as well as to gain a greater understanding of the earthquake and nuclear risk and its impact on immigration and international communities.
