The value of Stephen Leacock’s work as an internationally acclaimed humorist has always overshadowed his contribution to the understanding and dimensions of Canadian political economy. Trained as a Political Economist, Leacock spent his academic career at McGill University, Montreal teaching generations of scholars about the relationship between the state and the economy. Today, more than ever, Canadians are ready for a serious discussion and debate about the state’s role in our lives, about citizenship and income gaps, about poverty and security and about our contribution to globalizing forces of production and distribution. At this conference our focus will be on understanding Canadian political economy through the lenses of sustainability vs. growth, the effects of externalities on economic activity and the environment, the distribution of wealth and finding alternatives to the GDP to measure wellbeing. The Leacock Museum and Lakehead University Orillia invite scholars and community activists to submit proposals for papers, roundtables and workshops on the following conference themes:
• Leacock’s Legacy for Canadian Political Economy
• Canadian Political Economy – Re-Visioning Class, Gender and Labour
• Globalization and Democracy – Mutually Exclusive Modes of Political Economy
• Limits to Growth – The Political Economy of Sustainability
• Alternative Economic Systems – Local, Cooperative, Social economy
• The Changing Balance in Canadian Economic Geography
Keynote Speaker:
John Ralston Saul a long-time champion of freedom of expression, was elected President of International PEN in October 2009. An award-winning essayist and novelist, Saul has had a growing impact on political and economic thought in many countries. Declared a “prophet” by TIME magazine, he is included in the prestigious Utne Reader’s list of the world’s 100 leading thinkers and visionaries.
