I am seeking a chair to complete a panel for the 2013 AHA Conference in New Orleans. The panel explores the impact of the environment and geography on the lives of Nineteenth Century African Americans in the Civil War South.
One paper explores how fugitive slaves from the Pensacola region undermined the institution of slavery. The second paper examines how maroons in the Tidewater region of Virginia aided the Union war effort. The third paper explores the experiences of free African Americans in the Confederate states of Louisiana and Virginia.
Interested chairs, please send a brief c.v. to Lynette Garrett at lg1845a@american.edu by Monday, February 13, 2012. The deadline for AHA proposals is February 15, 2012.
