I seek two panelists, a chair and a commentator with interests in Progressive Era women, immigration, and identity for a session proposal for the AHA Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA, January 3-6, 2013. Work that also includes education and/or performance is especially welcome. My paper, titled Building National Character: Urbanization, Americanization and Folk Dance in Chicago, 1890 - 1940, explores folk dance as employed by Progressive social settlement workers in the early twentieth century as both bridging and contesting the cosmopolitanism of American cities.
