Work/Force is an interdisciplinary conference that aims to serve as a platform for the analysis of the construction of diverse South African masculinities in the post-apartheid media (e.g. newspapers, film, advertising, art, magazines and blogs). The conference asks how discourses might be engendered, within the South African context, around concepts of culture, race and class as they pertain to the articulation of masculinities in mainstream and niche media entities both locally and internationally. We invite papers on the themes raised by this topic, which may include: Marginal identities, nationality, masculinity in crisis, violence and idealised masculinities. Abstracts of no more than 300 words accompanied by a brief biographical statement (150 words maximum) (and contact information) should be sent to: MASCULINITY@sun.ac.za by 16 March 2012.
