Enrique Krauze is a Mexican historian, essayist, and director of the cultural magazine Letras Libres. In 1974 he received a Ph.D. in History from El Colegio de México and in 1978 he was the recipient of a Guggenheim scholarship. Krauze has been professor at the El Colegio de México and visiting professor at St. Antony's College (Oxford) and at The Wilson Center. For over twenty years he collaborated with Octavio Paz in the magazine Vuelta where he was senior editor. In 1999 he launched the cultural magazine Letras Libres, which is distributed in several Spanish-speaking countries. Krauze is a regular contributor of Dissent Magazine, The New Republic, The Washington Post, The New York Review of Books, and The New York Times. He is the author of more than 20 books; among these are: La presencia del pasado, Retratos personales, El poder y el delirio, De héroes y mitos, and Redentores: Ideas y poder en América Latina, which has been translated as Redeemers: Ideas and Power in Latin America (2011).
