I am seeking a chair and moderator to complete a panel for the 2013 OAH Conference in San Francisco. The panel explores issues “entangled histories” through the preservation and interpretation at three Civil War sites.
More specifically, one paper explores the three distinct, but inter-related historical sites at Andersonville, including the prisoner of war camp, the National Cemetery, and the National Prisoner of War Museum. This paper explores the transformation of the once infamous Civil War prison site into a patriotic arena of suffering. The second paper addresses preservation and interpretation issues at the Nashville Battlefield. This topic will explore the early efforts to establish Nashville as a national military park and the subsequent failure to protect the 1864 battlegrounds. This topic will also address contemporary preservation patterns and efforts at Nashville. The third paper explores issues of preservation at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. This paper addresses contemporary preservation patterns and efforts to rehabilitate the historic landscape.
Interested chairs and commentators, please send the requested brief bio/c.v. to Jennifer Murray at murrajm@auburn.edu by February 10, 2012. The deadline for proposals to the OAH is February 15, 2012. More specific information at on the 2013 OAH can be found at: http://annualmeeting.oah.org/call_for_proposals/2013_sanfrancisco.html
