Seeking participants for an AHA 2013 Panel: "Bridging the Local and the Global Through the Histories of Science, Medicine, and Technology."
We are seeking panelists and commenters for a panel that explores the idea of global or international history through a focus on science/medicine/technology. Committed participants include:
* Prakash Kumar, Assistant Professor of History at Colorado State University, specializing in Modern South Asia, the History of Science, and Global History. His paper will focus on civil society movements against the expansion of GM crops in India and on the ways that these localized movements scale up, as for instance when activists like Vandana Shiva connect with transnational activists and dynamics.
* Julia Irwin, Assistant Professor of History at the University of South Florida, specializing in the U.S. and the World and the history of foreign aid and humanitarian assistance. Her paper will focus on the evolution of U.S. responses to international natural catastrophes during the Cold War period. In so doing, it will explore some of the ways that U.S. disaster relief can help us rethink the place of the U.S. in 20th century international history.
Should you be interested in participating as a presenter, please contact both Prakash Kumar (prakash.kumar@colostate.edu) and Julia Irwin (juliai@usf.edu) with a short proposal by February 1, 2012. The final proposal for the AHA will be due February 15, so selected participants will need to have their final abstracts in by February 10.
