Transformative Works and Cultures, an on-line Gold Open Access journal, seeks contributions for a special issue devoted to comic book fandom and its appropriation and transformation of comic books and their characters. We welcome theoretically informed submissions addressing (but not limited to)
Case studies of appropriation of characters by specific reading communities to engage in civic action;
Discussions of transformative works such as fan fiction, fan art or fan vids;
The development of comic book shops and their relation to fan communities;
Transformations across national boundaries through the globalized comic book market;
Popular reaction to comic book "events" such as the Death Captain America or Superman's renunciation of citizenship;
Explorations of the migration of fans into professional ranks.
