Jewellery was a part of the material culture of early modern society and affected many people through its production, trade, and consumption. Nevertheless, the study of jewellery traditionally has never been considered an academic discipline. With recent scholarship this attitude is changing. The papers presented today, and contributions from the invited participants, draw upon expertise from a variety of fields to examine the cultural importance of jewellery within this period. They demonstrate how the study of jewellery can develop understanding of the social and historical context in which objects existed. Jewellery can also provide inspiration for modern practitioners (as demonstrated by the Bishopsland creations in Room 46 of the British Museum), ensuring that historical collections remain relevant today.
