For the 2012 Annual Meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the War and Peace Studies Caucus of the American Studies Association would like to assemble scholars and activists for a roundtable discussion of the political and cultural significance of Vieques, its use by the U.S. Navy as a bombing range, and the legacies of that history. We believe that this complex history intersects with, and should be studied through the perspectives offered by, the areas of inquiry that lie at the hart of contemporary scholarship on War and Peace and American Studies more generally. These include the relationship between base culture, colonialism, and the global presence of the U.S. military; the environmental legacies of U.S. war making; the racial and ethnic dimensions of U.S. militarism; the politics of local and transnational community organizing and activism; and the politics of tourism. We invite participants whose scholarly or activist work focuses on Vieques to participate in a discussion of these and other issues and of how Vieques both offers an opportunity to apply the critical perspectives offered by American Studies scholarship to a pressing social concern and complicates those perspectives. Particularly because of the location of the 2012 Annual Meeting, this subject demands our attention. People interested in participating should contact David Kieran, Co-Chair of the War and Peace Studies Caucus, at david.kieran@fandm.edu.
