To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Little Steel Strike, faculty and staff of Youngstown State University’s Department of History, Center for Applied History and Center for Working-Class Studies, in conjunction with the Ohio Historical Society’s Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor, will hold a conference September 20-22, 2012 in Youngstown, Ohio. This site is especially appropriate because Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley was one of the major sites of conflict during the strike. 2012 also marks the 35th anniversary of “Black Monday” on September 19, 1977, which was when LTV announced the closure of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube’s Campbell Works, triggering a wave of steel mill closings not only in the Mahoning Valley but throughout the industrial east and Midwest.
We are seeking individual paper proposals or complete panels which focus on any aspect of labor and/or work and workplaces during the Great Depression and continuing through World War II. For individual papers, send a 250-word proposal; for panels, send individual 250-word proposals for each paper plus a 250-word panel description. Please include your name, affiliation, and e-mail address on the proposals.
