The Africa Berlin International Conference (ABIC) which in collaboration with Humboldt University, Berlin, provides a forum for research and debate on Africa’s developmental challenges invites paper for a conference to discuss peace, security and sustainable development in Africa. The idea is to have a closer look at the relationship between peace, security and sustainable development in Africa. Some set of normative theoretical questions that arise from this relationship are: First, the question about the normativity of social arrangements or structures from the point of view of social reality. This makes peace a social contract that gets locked into a cognitive and theoretical framework of harmonizing expectations between parties or enabling parties to predict each others responses. The second question, which leads directly back to the first, is about the extent to which theories of security, have to draw on existing empirical evidence and experience regarding the functioning of differing institutional arrangements, in order to avoid merely issuing normative demands of peace in a vacuum. The third question is about how the absence of antagonistic conflicts (security) enables sustainable development. In other words, when associated expectations of people are met in a society, there is a social order (security) that enables prosperity and sustains development.

The conference holds on 27th – 31st August, 2012 at 13a Phillipstr, Faculty of Agriculture and Horticulture, Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany.

All scholars and graduate students of all disciplines are eligible to apply with a submission of an abstract (maximum of 250 words). The deadline of application is March 31st, 2012, and the extended deadline is April 14, 2012. The abstract should include the paper title, the author's name, address, telephone number, email address, institutional affiliation and about 5 key words. Authors are allowed to select one or two subject areas where their papers fit in. Full length papers must be submitted by July 30th, 2012. Submitted papers will be peer-reviewed and selected papers will be published in book form.

A registration fee of 120 Euros will be paid(for conference materials and a copy of conference proceeding).
