This is the 2nd Call for submissions for a two-day symposium on March 30-31, 2012, sponsored jointly by the Department of Humanities (Health Science Center, College of Medicine), the Melbern G. Glasscock Center for Humanities Research (Texas A&M University; USA), and the History of Medicine and Health Care Program at the University of Calgary, Alberta (Canada) where the preceding symposia were hosted.
The symposium will cover the history of health-related disciplines, to include a range of topics from Ancient Times to the Modern Period. One special theme will be ‘Civil War Medicine,’ in commemoration of the 150th Anniversary, with an accompanying keynote speaker from the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, and an exhibit from the National Institutes of Health.
The program will also include a second topnotch distinguished keynote speaker, awards for the best paper and poster, a reception/banquet, concerts, and a film. It will take place at the splendid new Health Education Professions Building on the Texas A&M Health Science Center in Bryan, Texas (USA).
The symposium will be open to graduate/medical, advanced undergraduate and early postgraduate trainees at the Health Science Center, as well as the TAMU Colleges, with wider participation across the United States and Canada.
The object of the symposium is to encourage and highlight student research/scholarship to sharpen awareness of what is continuous with the present, and what lessons and insights can be learned from the past to prepare for the future. Our mission is (a) to foster interdisciplinary and trans-chronological exchanges among new and emerging scholars; (b) to create a safe platform where they can share and discuss research with peers and faculty; (c) to stimulate student networking in related disciplines across State/National/International institutions.
We welcome oral/platform presentations and posters. Full panel proposals of 3-4 papers on a particular theme for individual sessions would also be welcome. The presentations will be 15/20 minutes followed by discussion. Interested presenters should send a proposed title, a brief abstract (ca. 150 words), and a short CV to the organizing committee via email to Drs. Gül Russell (russell@medicine.tamhsc.edu), Peter Toohey (Peter.Toohey@ucalgary.ca) or Frank Stahnisch (fwstahni@ucalgary.ca) no later than 10 January 2012.
