International Symposium
Tapestries in castles. Symposium on the presentation of tapestries on the occasion of the re-establishment of the parade room in Bruchsal Palace, former residence of the Prince Bishops of Speyer. 17th to 19 May 2012 in Bruchsal.
To mark the refurbishment of the state apartments in Bruchsal palace, former residence of the Prince Bishop of Speyer, the Staatliche Schlösser und Gärten Baden-Württemberg invites curators and conservators to take part in an international conference, “Tapestry in castles”, the theme of which is the display of tapestries in the castle setting and the problems associated therewith.
In addition to the variety of institutions caring for historic furnishings, there are also considerable differences in the methods of hanging tapestries in their original context, both in the way the heritage objects are treated and in the way conditions are prepared for conservation.
To introduce the current concept for the installation in Bruchsal, there will be an exchange of different experiences at other castles. In addition, there will be discussions about the complex historic, conservation and didactic requirements for the presentation of tapestries.
Collaboration among the various international experts caring for tapestries will lead to the future display of Bruchsal`s tapestries satisfying the high demands of historic intention, concern for long term preservation and modern presentation. The different approaches, experiences and investigations on the most important visual impact of a redefinition of a courtly interior will be released in a final publication.
The symposium will be rounded off with an excursion to another palace in Baden-Württemberg and a special visit to the tapestries presented there.
