About the Workshop
The environment plays a vital role for functioning of ecosystem and is ultimately related with human health. The increasing human population and industrial development has worsened the problem of disposal of anthropogenic chemicals and wastes in the environment. A majority of these contaminants contain potentially genotoxic and carcinogenic substances, since these genotoxins interact with genetic material of animals leading to variety of ill effects.
Biomarkers are rapidly becoming valuable toxicological tools in identifying and evaluating contaminants and their toxicity and bioavailability to the animals. These biomarkers are highly useful as the early indicators for the presence of xenobiotics and their biological effects which make it possible to implement correct measures before organisms, communities or ecosystem, suffer irreversible damages. In this context this workshop will be aimed to illuminate the participants with advanced techniques used for the assessment of environmental toxicity It is also aimed
to increase the awareness to manage environmental toxicity
to assess the effects of toxicants on environment
to minimize the impacts of toxicants on environment
to enable the participants to have significant experience and training in the field of toxicology
to exchange scientific informations among experts on issues related
to environmental toxicology, toxicity assessment and hazardous managements
Annamalai University
The Annamalai University is a unitary residential university instituted in the year 1929 by the great philanthropist Dr. Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar of Chettinad, the first Founder Pro-Chancellor. Subsequently, the University reached new heights of excellence under the guidance second founder Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Rajah Sir M. A. Muthiah Chettiar of Chettinad and the present Pro-Chancellor Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy. The University has nine faculties and forty-nine departments and over 3240 members as its teaching staff. The University hosted the spectacular 94th Indian Science Congress during January, 2007. Annamalainagar is already a busy and full-fledged University town, east of Chidambaram, the abode of Lord Nataraja. The University campus, including the colleges, hostels, and playgrounds, occupies an area of about thousand acres.
Host Department
The Department of Zoology, Annamalai University has made outstanding strides in both teaching and research activities in past more than 75 years. The Department offers M.Sc. Zoology, M.Sc. Environmental Biotechnology, and M.Sc. Integrated Zoology (5 years) and M.Sc. Integrated Bioinformatics (5 years) programs in addition to M.Phil.and Ph.D. programs in all the subjects.
