By the end of WWII, the Europeans perceived that the US' military and economic supremacy was rooted in the superiority of their integrated military, technological and industrial complex. Indeed, it appeared that one of the reasons of the victory of USA in WWII had been their ability in exploiting scientific research and in integrating it in their industrial system.
The workshop aims to explore (but it's not limited to) the following topics:
The role of the USA in the making of intra-European research institutions, such as EURATOM, CERN, EMBO, etc; Collaboration/confrontation between Europe and the USA in scientific, technological and industrial projects;
The role of US companies, foundations and universities in the development of scientific research in Europe;
State policies in Post-war Europe as answers to the "American challenge";
Projects of intra-European scientific networks in post-war Europe
