CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:
Edited volume on Net Neutrality
EDITOR: Zack Stiegler, Indiana University of Pennsylvania
PUBLISHER: Lexington/Rowman & Littlefield (tentative)
Network neutrality (“net neutrality”) is perhaps the most contentious media policy issue in recent history, raising serious questions about access, control, expression, and regulation online. The FCC’s Open Internet Initiative yielded heated debate among consumers, ISPs, politicians and the technology industry Although the FCC officially adopted its net neutrality policy in December of 2010, the issue is far from resolved, with conservative critics decrying the policy as overbearing governmental regulation, while consumer groups argue that the FCC’s policies don’t go far enough in protecting Internet openness.
This call solicits scholarly essays examining net neutrality from a variety of academic perspectives and methodologies. Possible areas of exploration include, (but are by no means
limited to): the various implications of "neutrality" (eg. neutral structures, search neutrality, neutrality of services/applications, content/message neutrality, etc.); critical policy analysis; discourse analysis; political economy; implications of net neutrality for the perceived "digitial democracy" of the Internet; economic impact of net neutrality on e-commerce; situating anti-net neutrality sentiment within the larger socio-political context (i.e. corporate personhood); and the role of the FCC in Internet regulation (situated within the agency's historical role/trajectory).
