The multiple faces of republicanism: democracy, constitutionalism and popular politics in the Hispanic world, 1824-1873
Friday, 20 January 2012
@ The University of Warwick
A one day international symposium to explore the relationship between republican ideas, the creation of republican systems of government and popular political practices and movements in the Hispanic Atlantic, with particular emphasis on Mexico, Colombia and Spain.
Discussion will address, amongst other topics, the comparative analysis of the republican models adopted in Mexico (1824, 1836, 1857) and Spain (1873), republican reading of the works of Montesquieu favoured by many Hispanic politicians and theorists traditionally suspicious of the republican ideas associated with Machiavelli and the Italian Renaissance, and the challenge posed by popular movements to the aspiration of republicans to enhance political participation and popular constitutional representation.
